Next Dinner Meeting: Tuesday, November 20, 2018

IVAR’S Salmon House, 401 NE Northlake Way, Seattle

5:30pm – Meet and Greet

6:45pm – Dinner in the Banquet Room

Topic: “The Steamer Virginia V Foundation”

Speakers: Heron Scott, Executive Director

We have two NEW menu choices, thanks to the team at IVAR’s Salmon House (see below).  As well as learning more about the Virginia V, we will be voting at this meeting on next year’s SBYC Board Members. REMEMBER: Please use the Comments box in your RSVP on Evite to advise how many people and which dinner menu choice each would like.

The Virginia V is a glorious and unique part of local history.  In 1921 Anderson & Company of Maplewood, Washington, began construction on the Virginia V. The ship was built of local old-growth fir. She was launched March 9, 1922, and towed to downtown Seattle for the installation of her engine and steam plant. In Seattle the engine was removed from the Virginia IV and installed in the Virginia V. On June 11, 1922, the Virginia V made her maiden voyage from Elliott Bay in Seattle to Tacoma down the West Pass.  She was a passenger ferry in this area until the late 1930’s.  In the 1940’s she moved to the Columbia River for service, but that proved unsuccessful. After her return to this area, her history continued, including winning the Great Steamboat Race in 1948.

In 1976, supporters formed the Virginia V Foundation, a non-profit organization to preserve the vessel and celebrate her history.

Come hear the whole story and what’s going on today from Heron Scott, the Executive Director of the Virginia V Foundation.  The upcoming centennial for this flagship vessel is in 2022, sure to be a big happening for all Puget Sound boaters!
