Summer’s over and with that comes cooler and wetter weather. This summer’s wildfire smoke was pretty bad. I for one (as I’m sure you were) was glad to see it go! Other than the smoke the weather was pretty good for sailing and cruising. My boat is still out of commission so I didn’t get to sail her at all. However, Ben and I still went sailing every other Saturday with Footloose. I want to thank all of those in the club who volunteered at several different events. Your help is always appreciated. Thank You!
Be sure to be at this month’s dinner meeting to hear about sailing in Tahiti with Roger and Julie. I’m sorry I missed last month’s meeting as I love to hear about people’s adventures of sailing all about the world. I, for one, will never be able to do that unless I get a different wife! I don’t want to do that, so around the world cruising is out for me. The world is a fabulous place to see and seeing it by boat must be fantastic!
One more thing, it’s not too early to pay next year’s club dues. Spend the $70.00 here before Christmas starts taking your money!

The staff at Ivar’s Salmon House has agreed to provide one or two NEW menu choices. Since the Pasta dish has been the lease favorite, I expect to at least substitute one new choice there. As of the Rudderpost deadline, I have not heard from them, but look for an update in the EVITE this week. REMEMBER: Please use the Comments box in your RSVP to advise how many of which dinner menu choice you would like.
This month’s speakers will be my wife, Julie, and I. We enjoyed a wonderful bareboat charter sailing trip this last Spring in French Polynesia. Our total party of 17 people took 2 Sunsail 44 catamarans for 10 days, visiting Raiatea, Tahaa, and Bora Bora. We spent 5 days on other islands prior to the sailing, and another 5 days after the 10-day boating segment. What a vacation! The weather was outstanding, the island people very gracious, and the snorkeling/diving was out of this world! Sharks, manta rays, eels, and countless species of colorful tropical fish were everywhere.
We’ll show you our slides, a few videos, and relay some good stories about our adventure in French Polynesia. The biggest finding here is just how doable this trip is for any of us. We can’t wait to go again!

Note that the deadline for reservations is also the deadline for cancelling a previous reservation; otherwise you will be charged for the meal.
Dinner is $35 per person. If you charge your meal (credit card), we will add $1 per meal. Please purchase your drinks from the staff in the banquet room. The receipts count towards our room rental minimums.

The update on this topic is primarily two things:
- Please get your annual dues (typically $70) paid prior to December 15th
- The ways to pay DO NOT include the peer-to-peer online banking method, which is unfortunate. However, this peer-to-peer method can in our case end up with some confusion and errors, so we’ve had to eliminate this one method, for now. So, your payment options include:
- Mailing a check, payable to SBYC, to our address in Ballard
- Paying by check or credit card at one of the upcoming Dinner Meetings (October or November)
The other important thing we do each Fall, along with collecting the annual dues, is to update all members’ contact info (the usual name/address/phone/email items plus info about your boat). Historically the process has been a little cumbersome. You’d print a form fill it in and get it to a board member via mail or hand delivery. The SBYC TransPuget Race was held on September 15, 2018 on Shilshole Bay in Puget Sound. Sixteen boats registered for the charity event, in which all the proceeds are donated to the Footloose Sailing Association. Launched in 1991, The Footloose Sailing Association is the Northwest’s premiere non-profit sailing program for people of all disabilities, their friends, family and caregivers (https://footloosedisabledsailing.org/)
The day was forecast to be partly cloudy in the morning with showers developing by the afternoon, and winds from the south of 5 to 15 knots. This year the club set a temporary mark near Point Jefferson, and this became the first truly Trans-Puget race to be held in recent memory.
As the boats approached the starting line, the south wind was as forecast at about 10 knots with occasional puffs up to 15 or so. After a clean start, all the boats began the first long downwind reach. The wind was running over 10 knots, so everyone was making good time. After the downwind reach to “Jeff Head” it was nearly a beam reach across to Spring beach, then a beat back south to Shilshole. The race committee decided to keep the last short mile long leg to the south in the course, then a quick spinnaker run back to the finish line. The total distance was about 14 miles. Most of the boats took around three hours to complete the course.
The award celebration was held at Ray’s Boat House, and they let us use the Fireside Room for our
gathering. (Thank you Ray’s!) Winners in each class were:
- Class A: Outlaw (Derek Storm)
- Class B: Pickled Beets (John Rahn)
- Class C: Eye Candy (Jim Marta)
Again this year SBYC donated all the race income to the Footloose Sailing Association. This came to over $1300 to their cause.
Race Chair, Shilshole Bay Yacht Club
Given this is the time of year to renew our memberships in the club, I thought it timely to point out there are a few financial benefits that come from being a member in SBYC. Here are the “Big Three”:
(1) Reciprocal Moorage
We have a number of relationships with other yacht clubs that include reduced overnight moorage costs. Check our website or your Club Roster booklet to see the list.
As you plan your next cruise or outing, think about whether an overnight moorage at one of these clubs’ facilities would be fun. I recommend checking the website as new reciprocal relationships get added during the year. There are some rules to follow (usually just a single night per trip), but this is a great way to enjoy the shoreside area where you’re cruising at a significantly reduced cost.
(2) Fisheries Supply Discounts
One of the local mainstays of the marine supply business, Fisheries Supply has for decades provided yacht club members with discounts from regular list pricing. These discounts vary in relation to the margins available in a given product line, but every little bit helps, especially when you’re talking “boat projects.” There is a procedure to follow here, which I have just confirmed with the Fisheries Credit Manager. It is this:

Once you are here, just click the box to open a Fisheries Account. You may wonder why they don’t ask you to name “Shilshole Bay Yacht Club” in this process, but it is effectively “built-in” to the logic behind this initial Landing Page. You enter your name, create a password, and get your own account linked to your email that you provide.
The last step is the system takes you back to this same initial Landing Page, with a prompt that says “Almost done – enter your promotion code”. And that code is “Welcome”, which you saw when you first got to the Landing Page. I just went through this process myself. Hopefully, my explanation here will help guide you and reduce confusion. When you shop online as an “account holder” their Details button will show the List Price and your Discounted Price on a specific item. When in the store, just advise the store personnel at check-out that you are an Account Holder, providing your ID and potentially confirming your email address to validate that. If you’re doing major projects, the money you save through this opportunity will more than pay for a year’s Club dues. In the past, Fisheries would establish a Club account and then get the names of people authorized as club members. With today’s digital credit card information used by most of us, this led to the new approach above of each person having their own account, in order to not have people charging things on other people’s cards. If you were used to the old system, please take a minute and go online to ensure you have your own Account.
(3) Charitable Contributions
This is a bit of a stretch in that you don’t necessarily need to be a member of SBYC in order to deduct charitable contributions on your tax return.
However, as most are aware, SBYC provides a good deal of charitable funding to the Footloose program (providing sailing experiences to the disabled) every year, and Northwest Harvest, and other charities. Our Trans-Puget race proceeds all go to Footloose (over $1,300 just recently). But, you can also make a personal donation to Footloose or other marine-oriented charities and get a tax deduction for that. Thanks to your membership in SBYC, you will become more familiar with many of these organizations, potentially leading to those personal contributions and the tax deductibility of those.
Of course, the biggest return for one’s membership in SBYC is the great fun we all have together, but getting a little financial lift here and there sure doesn’t hurt.
The club will elect Flag Officers and a Director for 2019 at the November
meeting. Nominations of members in good standing may be made from the floor at the October dinner meeting. Such nominee will be invited to speak for two minutes explaining their vision, and how their addition to the board of
directors will benefit the club.
