Happy New Year SBYC

I am looking forward to being Cruise Chair for the next two years, although following in Nancy’s Kick’s footsteps will be a challenge.  The reason: I like the Shilshole Bay Yacht Club.  Its members are super friendly people who maintain the club’s vision of learning about, exploring and enjoying of the waters and harbors of Puget Sound, with boats, or with friends who have boats.

My goal as cruise chair is to let you know when social events are happening, what to bring, and where to meet, and to encourage all our members to join us.  The majority of our cruises take place in locations that can be reached by boat and car.  Wouldn’t it be nice to plan a small get-away for an overnight out of the house?  Spend a night in beautiful downtown Poulsbo?  Our cruising happy hours and potlucks take place in interesting small harbors.  Our regular dinner meetings, at Ivar’s Salmon House, provide a venue to meet new cruisers or catch up with old friends, as well as listening to interesting speakers.  Who would have known Marine Toilets could be so fascinating?

Speaking of getting away, the winter weekend at Wenatchee is coming up, February 9-11, 2018.   Mike and Bonnie have the details in this month’s Rudderpost.  No need for a boat at this weekend; shopping at Leavenworth, fun in the snow and wine tasting with friends, are the orders of the day.

The Bell Harbor event is March 2-4.  Bell Harbor is steps away from Seattle’s Pike Place Market, Seattle Art Museum, shopping, and city life.  On Saturday evening we gather at Anthony’s for a seafood dinner, with a great view of the Ferris Wheel and harbor lights.  Everyone is welcome.  We have reserved 8 slips for 2018.  For reservations, send me a note if you plan to bring your boat, or if you can only make the dinner.

Commodore’s Corner by Ken McKenzie

Here it is 2018 – it’s here – ready or not. At the start of the year, many of us set goals that we wish to achieve. My goal is to do as many activities as I can. As the board members heard at the last meeting my boat had sunk at its moorage. It didn’t go completely under, just three feet or so of water in cabin. The owner of the house where I moor it noticed the bow was down quite a bit and put a high speed pump in it. However the boat is extremely damp inside and is getting very moldy inside. The surveyor came down Thursday and will send his assessment to my insurance company next week. I hope it’s salvageable as I have had that boat since August of ‘96.

I hope the New Year brings all of us prosperity and good health (and good news regarding my boat.) Until then I hope to see you all at the next dinner meeting on January 16, where our Vice Commodore has a great speaker lined up for us. Until the 16th – smooth sailing and fair winds.

Quartermaster Report by Nancy Merson

I have 4 fleece caps from 2016 that I have made into a smaller size and would like to sell for only $25 each. They are not the windproof fleece that the latest hats were made of and are in navy blue only. See me at the next dinner meeting if interested…I will have them with me to try on for size. I will also have decals for your boat or auto window as well. These are only $3.50 each and I have 17 left.

Winery Tour by Nancy Kick

Eight Bells Winery is one of our favorites and we would love to organize a private SBYC tasting/tour with them if there is enough interest. The winery is located in the Ravenna neighborhood of Seattle near 65th and Roosevelt. Some of you will know them as the wine we bring to parties with the glass corks. Best of all – the tour is free!

Please let me know if you would be interested. I’m looking at a Saturday afternoon around 4:30/5pm

and will organize the specifics with those who let me know you are interested.

Once again, it’s time to prepare for the Wenatchee Wintery Weekend.  This year’s event will take place over the weekend of February 9-11, 2018.

For the weekend, we recommend that club members and guests stay at:

The Coast Wenatchee Hotel, 201 North Wenatchee Avenue Wenatchee, WA 98801 Phone: 509-662-1234. (Call the hotel directly for reservations and say that you are with Shilshole Bay Yacht Club.)

The rooms will again be $109.00 + tax per night. The cut-off date to reserve a room for this rate is 1/19/2018, so you need to reserve your place as soon as possible.

We will be meeting in the bar at the Wenatchee Coast Hotel Friday evening for no host cocktails.

We are looking forward to once again to touring and wine tasting  at Martin Scott Winery on Saturday afternoon.

We plan to have Saturday night dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant.

Topic: Traversing the Northwest Passage

Speaker: Our very own Michael Hoffman

This is going to be one special presentation that you won’t want to miss.  Club member, Michael Hoffman, will be telling the story of the voyage of Alkahest (owned and sailed by cruising club members Jay Tremblay and Danica Richard) this past summer through the Northwest Passage, from Greenland up and around to Alaska.  Traversing the Northwest Passage was a mariner’s dream throughout the 18th, 19th, and even the 20th century, but now, finally, it’s a reality as a result of climate change and today’s yachting technology.  Even so, Alkahest was just the 128th boat to make this passage. “It was an amazing trip complete with icebergs, tidal glaciers, wonderful people, spectacular and austere scenery, whales, and pack ice,” Michael summarizes.

 

We expect a number of additional attendees at this presentation (friends of Michael’s, eager to hear his story), so don’t delay in making your reservations.  Having many guests will also make this event more interesting, as we can get to know many of these people who know Michael, but may not know us yet.  Michael tells me many of them are boaters and could be interested in our club as well.  So, please, get your reservations in soon and make plans to join us for this special Dinner Meeting.
