As we begin closing in on the end of the year I wanted to thank all the club members who have volunteered this year. It has been a challenging and odd year. In addition to the folks on the Board I would also like to extend a thank you to many of our Past Commodores who, over the course of this year, have provided some additional “behind the scenes” support. Thank you all for your support and time. It is this dedication and willingness to continue to support this organization that makes us successful.
David Horn, Rubie Johnson, and I made up the Nominating Committee this year and have recruited a slate of candidates for the 2021 year; for more details see the article later in this Rudderpost. We will take nominations from the floor and hold a vote for the slate of officers at the November 17th Happy Hour Meeting held via Zoom. Look for details in your email as the date approaches. Additionally, I’d like to thank Rubie Johnson and David Horn for all their efforts in helping to pull together next year’s board.
Snowbirds, get those boats ready ‘cause we are gonna hold our race series for the 2020-2021 season. Our Race Chair, Ben Lobaugh, has organized this tough season. We are following the Covid guidelines that have been set by the State and used by other clubs who have been hosting races this year. You can find the guidelines here: http://covid-19-racing-rules/ Our Race Chair will communicate any needed adjustments via email to the racing skippers and also via updates to the website.
In addition to organizing our races Ben has also served as our Vice Commodore this year: two big jobs! Thanks for your efforts here, Ben.
Our Cruise Chair, Patrica Shannon-Garvey, has put together a set of dates for our 2021 season. With any luck we will be able to hold some of these events. So be sure to check her article and mark the dates on your calendar. Additionally Patrica has done an amazing job managing all the cancelations and keeping upbeat despite the challenges she has faced this year.
Rear Commodore, Pat Hillis, is gearing up to handle membership and dues collection in this challenging time. See her article in this newsletter for details on how to quickly pay dues and keep your Roster information uptodate.
Our Treasurer, LB Day, has done a fine job keeping our finances in order. We close out this challenging year in a good financial position. Because our events typically break even and we have canceled most of them, our finances haven’t been significantly impacted. Our budget set out at the beginning of the year looks different than expected. The costs of running our events has been offset by the lack of income from them as well. With a couple of exceptions we have avoided most cost outlays for our canceled events by either requesting refunds for reservations or pushing reservations into 2021. Incoming dues for 2021 will put us in a good position for next year.
I’d like to thank Katie Breitling for stepping into the role of Secretary mid year and taking on the challenging position of managing our reciprocals, and also taking notes at our board meetings. Thank you, Katie!
Our Director at Large, Larry Clark, has been helping out where he can and has been a source of guidance over this year. Thank you, Larry.
Our Appointed officers; Pauline Bruce edits and publishes the monthly Rudderpost along with support from her Assistant Editor, Sally Rawlings; Quarter Master, Barbara Mallory, has kept and managed inventory of supplies including all our burgees and flags; Webmaster, Carole Bianquis, has done a great job managing and updating our website; All the while our Social Media Chair, Nancy Kick, has been keeping our social media active. Thank you to all of you.
Back in September I put out a call to help support the Recreational Boating Association of Washington’s Marine Park Conservancy effort to acquire Lake Bay marina. In this effort we raised $450. Thank you to those folks who made contributions. Unfortunately, the purchase has fallen through. You can see more details here: https://waggonerguide.com/bid-to-acquire-historic-lakebay-marina-falls-through/ and here: https://www.rbawmarineparksconservancy.org/initiatives/lakebay-update
I’m looking forward to 2021 with hopes that we can hold many of our events. I hope to “see” many of you on November 17th via Zoom. Remember to watch your email for connection details.

STOP!! PAY YOUR DUES NOW, OK??
(And we have some new payment options!)
Time is running out on 2020, and guess what: So is your SBYC Membership!
Despite our slow 2020 while we grappled with the ravages of Covid-19, SBYC has a
line-up of things planned for the new year along with some oldies but goodies
that got waylaid in this pandemic time.
On the slate (with fingers crossed and hopes high) are dinner meetings, speakers,
cruises, races, parties and a rendezvous. Yes, some will depend on what “phase”
the state is in regarding the Coronavirus, but we’ve already had one well-
attended dinner meeting—OK, you provided your own dinner, but we had an
outstanding speaker via Zoom!
We’re creeping up on 2021 and membership renewal forms are available right
now. Your quick renewal will go a long way in making this next year work for all of
us. Click on http://shilsholebayyachtclub.org/members/membership-
renewal/ and you’ll find the form near the bottom of the page. One new thing
you’ll find on the form this year is a payment option—either pay by check when
you fill out the form (you can fill out the form electronically and mail a check to
the address provided), or click on the “Bill Me” option and an invoice will be sent
to you via email.
It’s especially important to fill out the form if you’ve had any changes to your
profile in the past year—that means, phone numbers, emails, addresses, new
boats, new boat names, even family/partnership names. The information for the
club roster comes directly from the renewal forms so, in a take on an old
sentiment, “if your information is old and inaccurate on the form, it will be old
and inaccurate in the roster.”
The deadline for renewals, and for being listed in the roster, is December 15.
Thanks for your quick response.
This month we are kicking off our annual Snowbird race series!
