One of the many characteristics of this club that draws me in is the generosity of its members. As a club we help sponsor several charities, and as individuals we give to far more causes. Your impact is considerable.
A couple of weeks ago I participated in the Pink Boat Regatta in Tacoma. If you are not familiar with it, the Pink Boat Regatta was started after the mother of a member of our racing community was diagnosed with breast cancer. It is a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. My team raised a little over $1,000, and I believe the event raised over $60,000, and that was in Tacoma alone! There were also events in Bellingham and Seattle. Combined, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised to fight breast cancer.
I was not the sole member of SBYC out there either. Harold joined the team as helmsman and many of you donated and were there in spirit.
Though SBYC is a small club, we have a big impact in our community and I am grateful to be a part of such a good group of people. Thank you for all you do, both in support of our club and our community.

Now to cover some club business…
Thank you to everyone who has responded about club emails. It seems that there is a high incidence of emails being delivered to spam, or not delivered at all. David Horn is leading up a team to investigate a solution and streamline our communication channels.
More people are needed to fill next year’s Board seats. The nominating committee is reaching out to people. If you are interested let Rubie or any Board member know.
Christmas is coming upon us quickly. It would be great to see you all in person. David Horn is working hard to come up with a safe in person event. If you have any ideas on what we could do please get in contact with David.
Howdy Folks!
Join us on October 19 at 6:30pm for this month’s dinner meeting!
There will be the standard “around the horn” to hear updates on life from the members, followed by a presentation.
Look for the zoom link in your email as the time gets closer!

The improving pandemic conditions allowed us to have some good SBYC cruises this summer, after a year of no cruises. We started carefully with the Burn-Your-Own-Burger Burn in Liberty Bay in May. This allowed us to get boats fairly close together and anchor in the same area of the bay. This was the first baby step in getting our cruises back on the calendar. Then in June we met for the June Dock Soiree in Brownsville, and all-outdoor event on the docks. It was great to see so many of you in person at this outdoor event! The next month, July, we had two back-to-back raft-ups: July 3rd in Liberty Bay (unfortunately the main fireworks had to be cancelled again this year), and then on July 4th in Blakely Harbor to see a wonderful, private fireworks show there. The Summer Rendezvous later in July was planned for Mystery Bay, but I don’t think anyone made it up to the event. If you did, please send me an email with a brief recap of who attended and how it went. Our final cruise was a small gathering at Port Orchard over Labor Day Weekend hosted by the Tallmans (small due to the lack of slips available on short notice).
All in all we had a safe, successful cruise event line-up of outdoor events during this ongoing pandemic year. Let’s hope we can do more cruises in 2022, including some indoor events like the June Dinner Dance! 2022 cruise planning is in progress this month, with a draft 2022 Cruise Calendar to be reviewed by the Board at the next meeting in November, and finalized for the December Rudderpost. The first cruise of 2022 is planned to be at Bell Harbor in February.

Reciprocal Survey: Take 2!
Due to the underwhelming responses to this survey, we are going to try again. If you were one of
the four people to complete the survey, please do not answer the questions again. I have taken
note of your input. Thank you for taking the time to fill it out!
We, the board, are interested in some feedback regarding reciprocal moorage. I’ve created a
short survey to gather some of that information. It should only take you a minute to answer the
questions. If you have anything you’d like to add that isn’t on the survey, you can email me at
reciprocals@shilsholebayyachtclub.org. We appreciate your time and feedback.
Thank you so much. I hope to be able to see the club before the end of the year. Stay healthy!
Katie

NOMINATIONS For Leadership Positions For 2022
Hello from the Nominating Committee for next year’s officers. It is that time again when we pass along Flag Officers’ duties to a new group serving the club. We also confirm or accept club members in good standing to lead other important jobs on the Board of Directors.
The slate of officers and appointed positions for 2022 will be presented at the October dinner meeting, which the Board decided will again be a virtual one, due to safety. The elections will be held in November, and installation of 2022 officers and committees will be in December.
Any member in good standing may run for any elected position. If there are multiple candidates for a position, there will be an election for that position.
Please contact the Immediate Past Commodore, AJ Mallory, or Rubie Johnson if you would like to serve, or have questions. Refer to your 2021 Roster for governing By Laws, but questions are welcome. Many hearty thanks to the 2021 Board members. These are interesting times. We have learned a lot about having remote events and are prepared to meet in person again, or remotely as needed.
OPEN POSITIONS We are recruiting for Commodore, since our Vice Commodore has recently married and moved, also for Vice Commodore, and Director At Large 2022-2023.
Nominations to date or to be confirmed are:
Rear Commodore: Gene Laes,
Treasurer: Rubie Johnson,
Secretary: Katie Brietling,
Cruise Chair: David Horn,
Race Chair: Ben Lobaugh.
Agreeing to serve in appointed positions:
Webmaster: Carole Bianquis,
Fleet Captain: Tom Madden,
Quartermaster: Barbara M,
Rudderpost Editor: Pauline Bruce,
Proof Reader: Sally Rawlings.
Thank you!
The Immediate Past Commodore will be Ben Lobaugh, and Director At Large for 2021-2022 is Dennis Oelrich.
It takes more people than just a Board of Directors to run a volunteer club. Please contact any officer if you are interested in helping. And, thanks to the many volunteers in 2021.
Rubie Johnson, 2022 Nominating Committee. Please refer to your Roster for Bylaws and contact information or go to shilsholebayyachtclub.org.
